The Hazy Recollections group sessions aim to bring together diverse artists from the indie, folk and roots scenes, running with a different set of performers and acts every Sunday during the festival. The afternoon’s line-up features Mancunian singer-songwriter Damon Valentine, Rachel Sermanni and Japanese band Humbert Humbert. Sixteen years after their gig at the Barrowlands in 1994, the cult Glasgow band are back for one night only, performing both their Strange Kind of Love and Dogs in the Traffic albums in their entirety. Frontman James Grant is joined by co-founder Paul McGeechan and original members Gordon Wilson and Douglas MacIntyre, along with bassist Ewen Vernal, former Thrum vocalist Monica Queen and veteran moothie legend Fraser Spiers. The Texan trio of harmony singers share the stage with 2010 Danny Kyle Open Stage winners The Seonaid Aitken Set, a folk, jazz and bluegrass combo whose frontwoman’s other collaborative credits include Colin MacIntyre and Roddy Woomble. Skerryvore perform their second set of the festival along with new collaboration Mànran, fronted by Norrie MacIver and featuring Ross Saunders and Ewen Henderson performing original songs in Gaelic and English. Completing the evening’s line-up is North Uist fiddler Calum Iain MacCorquodale playing alongside Runrig’s guitar star Malcolm Jones. A trio of duos take to the stage, with the accordion and piano twosome Spiers & Boden giving a punk twist to traditional old English folk tunes, alongside the Orcadian noisemakers Saltfishforty and pianist Mhairi Hall’s reworking of her debut album Cairngorm with the help of fiddler Patsy Reid and the Edinburgh Quartet. The genre-busting Scottish/Canadian group featuring Karine Polwart and King Creosote formed two years ago at Celtic Connections and is back to perform songs from 2010 album Side Show. See preview, page 61. The Eduardo Niebla Experience City Halls, Candleriggs, 353 8000. 8pm. £10. The superb flamenco guitar virtuoso who has made his home in Yorkshire plays melodies influenced by his travels in India and the Middle East and strains of Gypsy Jazz. He is accompanied by guitarist Ricardo Garcia and tabla player Dharmesh Parmar. Leo Blanco and Keltic Tales Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, Sauchiehall Street, 353 8000. 8pm. £12.50. Born in the Venezuelan Andes, Conservatory-trained pianist (and winner of an Edinburgh Fringe Herald Angel award) Leo Blanco performs a veritable Venn diagram of musical styles from classical to Latin. He is joined by Breton combo Keltic Tales, who apparently

never set out to sound Celtic in the first place, but have found themselves the happy masters of an original folk-rock fusion sound that is peculiarly their own. Mollie O’Brien & Rich Moore and Ben Powell Tron Theatre, Trongate, 353 8000. 8pm. £12.50. Husband and wife duo Mollie and Rich perform works from their first collaborative album Saints and Sinners, featuring both originals and folk and blues reworkings of tracks by artists such as Richard Thompson and Tom Waits. Few would deny Sir Tom Jones his status as a true musical icon. He may be a septuagenarian but the Voice from the Valleys is not hanging up his hat just yet, with his latest album Praise & Blame (which he will perform here in full) having garnered some serious critical acclaim for its innovative pared-down gospel stylings. Liz Carroll & Friends and Mairearad & Anna Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, Sauchiehall Street, 353 8000. 8pm. £12.50. The hugely admired Irish/American fiddler Liz Carroll has clocked up a solid three decades of musical output on which to draw for this concert, accompanied by Cape Breton keyboardist Tracey Dares MacNeill, guitarist John Doyle and others. The Scottish double act of Mairearad Green (accordion and bagpipes) and Anna Massie (fiddle, banjo and guitar) round off the evening with some joyful instrumental folk. Israeli-born singer Yasmin Levy interweaves modern compositions with strands from her Ladino (Spanish- Jewish) heritage, along with Moorish and flamenco flavours. Maverick Edinburgh klezmer quintet Moishe’s Bagel join forces with her for original collaborations, as well as performing their own set.
