Ayrshire-born artist Michael Clark’s first full exhibition in Edinburgh for eight years reflects his love affair with France, which stretches back to his first visit to Paris in 1980. The new body of work features some familiar scenes such as St Germain and the Tuileries Gardens, but focuses on small moments of pleasure, such as light falling on a table top, a wall or a rooftop. As Clark says, ‘Coming from a small town in the west of Scotland, Paris provided a romantic vision. Fuelled by memories of Bonnard, Doisneau and the smell of perfume, tobacco and restaurants, it seemed pretty near perfect. It was a celebration of living.’ Doubtfire Gallery, Edinburgh, until Sat 23 Jun.
