INDIE/ALTERNATIVE EXTRA WIDTH Late night indie kicks in the company of Mogwai, Evol and friends

Stuart Braithwaite, guitarist with mountainous Scots rockers Mogwai, and Keiron Mellotte (pictured), long-serving DJ at Edinburgh indie nights Evol and Speaker Bite Me, go back a way together. ‘I’ve known Keiron since I was at college in Edinburgh in the early 90s,’ says Braithwaite. ‘He helped Mogwai out a lot when we first started by getting us support slots at his shows.’ Says Mellotte: ‘Stuart was the goth who lived two doors down from my place in Polwarth. We used to hang out and talk about The Cure.’ Although Mellotte started Extra Width in this very venue in the

mid-90s and Braithwaite joined in soon after, it wasn’t until a semi- legendary early-2000s weekly residency with Grainne Braithwaite at the Cowgate’s Gilded Saloon that the club hit its peak until the Cowgate fire did for the venue mere minutes before it was due to start one Saturday, taking Mellotte’s vinyl with it. He describes the simple musical ethos of the occasional night as

‘usually starting kind of downbeat and getting progressively more dance party as we get drunker.’ This month guest DJs will include friends Rhys Darby (Flight of the Conchords) and Ryan Wallace on the 18th. ‘Ryan was Gilded Saloon bar manager back in the day,’ says Mellotte, ‘and Rhys’ wife Rosie was our boss, so we had some great after-hours parties with them on the decks.’ (David Pollock) Wee Red Bar, 229 1442, 18 Aug, 11pm-5am, £5.
