Reaching for the sky at the National Museum of Flight
LITERARY AWARD FOR LENNOXLOVE BOOK FEST Scotland’s largest literary prize, the Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust Book Awards, will be celebrated this November as part of Lennoxlove Book Festival. The four finalists in the categories Fiction, Non- Fiction, Poetry and First Book will be announced in September, followed by a public vote to select the winner of the £30,000 prize. Previous authors to take the top spot include Janice Galloway for All Made Up and Jackie Kay for Red Dust Road. Check out scottishbookawards.com for more.
MUSEUM OF FLIGHT FLYING HIGH AFTER FUNDING BOOST The National Museum of Flight has announced plans for a £3.6m restoration project, as part of a highly anticipated facelift. Located at East Fortune Airfield, halfway between Haddington and East Linton, the museum has a varied collection of aeroplanes and aviation paraphernalia such as parachutes and radar equipment, as well as a dedicated Concorde exhibition.
NILE RODGERS FOR WICKERMAN For all those disappointed to have missed the mighty Nile Rodgers at Summerhall recently, take heart: the prolific producer is making his way to the Wickerman Festival at the end of the month. Disco legends Chic fronted by Rodgers (fresh from his chart-storming collaboration with Daft Punk), Glasgow-based folk-pop five-piece Admiral Fallow, electro-dub pioneers Dreadzone and London electro-pop trio Waylayers are just some of the new names to have been added to the line-up. The Skiddle Tent will be headlined by DJ Greg Wilson, making his
debut at Wickerman. Extended opening hours are in order for the return of the Vinyl Frontier Outdoor Stage (2pm–2am), with sets from Funkademia DJs Dave Dunne, Kidblast and Good for the Soul, as well as Insomania DJs Mark Swider, Luke Stanger, Filter Script and Andrew Dent.
HI-ARTS CLOSES ITS DOORS It’s with sadness that The List reports that cultural development agency for the Highlands and Islands Hi-Arts has gone into administration. The agency – which has been in existence since 1990 – has been shut down after running into financial difficulties.
VETTRIANO SET FOR MAJOR RETROSPECTIVE Controversial Scottish artist Jack Vettriano will have 20 years of his work celebrated at Glasgow’s Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in what promises to be the ‘most comprehensive exhibition ever’ dedicated to the Fife painter. The exhibition will run from 21 Sep–23 Feb, and feature more than 100 of his paintings.

IAIN BANKS With news that the late, great author, futurist and sci-i icon Iain Banks had an asteroid named after him (c/o Harvard’s Minor Planets Centre), we take a sneak peak at the summer events which will celebrate his life and legacy
In happy news, brought on by the saddest of events, Edinburgh UNESCO City of Literature Trust has brought together programmers from across the city to create an Iain Banks season, kicking off at the end of the month with the Iain Banks Book Quiz on Thu 25 Jul at the Central Library in Edinburgh.
Things are shaping up to be equally creative a week later at the capital’s Looking Glass Books on Wed 31 Jul with their Iain Banks-ism event. This one-off showcase, presented by the Society of Young Publishers, will include writers who have produced short stories incorporating an opening line from one of Banks’ books, with winning entries performed in dramatic readings. Submissions are open until Sun 14 Jul.
Look out too for the Scottish Poetry Library’s Exhibition of Sci-i Poems, with the SPL displaying a collection of sci-i poetry in his honour, until Sun 31 Aug.
On Sun 18 Aug, the much-loved 1996 TV adaptation of The Crow Road, starring Joe McFadden, Bill Paterson and Peter Capaldi, will be screened as a one-off event at the Filmhouse, in Edinburgh.
Finally, the programme will culminate with a special event at this year’s Edinburgh International Book Festival. The hotly anticipated A Celebration of Iain Banks at Charlotte Square Gardens on Sun 25 Aug will feature some of Banks’ close literary friends.
