MARRIAGE EQUALITY FUNDRAISER STAND UP FOR LOVE The Lighthouse, Glasgow, Sat 28 Sep

Tired of LGBT events featuring pink champagne and drag queens? So is Scott Galloway. The inspiration for his new event comes from a different source: Pulitzer Prize-winning author Toni Morrison. ‘When I first read The Bluest Eye, I felt utterly inspired by Morrison’s ability to tackle discrimination through literature,’ he says. ‘I read the book in a day and decided to re-evaluate everything I’ve done with my life. I realised that it’s the ordinary people who change the world. That was the moment when Stand Up for Love really came to fruition.’ Toni Morrison might not have been thinking about weddings when

she wrote her novel, but Galloway certainly was: all proceeds from the event will go to Stonewall in support of marriage equality. Luckily, the reasons to attend consist of more than just the goodness of your heart: Stand Up for Love also features a glitzy mix of art, literature, theatre, fashion and music. ‘I’ve tried to organise something for everyone,’ explains Galloway, ‘and each event has its own message, challenging both heterosexual and homosexual stereotypes, tapping into people’s preconceived ideas about the LGBT community.’

There’s been a lot of discussion lately about marriage equality, and it’s understandable that some LGBT folk are tiring of it, but Galloway argues that it’s a vital issue. ‘It’s an important step in the civil rights movement. It’s about celebrating and affirming the bond of two people who love each other, and acknowledging that two men or two women loving each other shouldn’t restrict their civil liberties.’ But it’s not just about the issues, it’s about the art too. ‘I’ve spent the last three months working with some of the most inspiring people and I’m eager to see how people respond to the work of artists, designers and musicians. I’m excited to see people’s reactions to the pieces and performances on the night.’ (Kirsty Logan) For further details see bit.ly/standup4love
