LAST BIG WEEKEND Club-focused nale for East End Social’s two-day festival

‘H aving been involved in music in Glasgow for nearly three decades I think this is the most exciting time for the city I’ve known,’ says Optimo’s Keith McIvor, aka JD Twitch, ‘and it’s great to have this chance to celebrate that.’ He is, let’s face it, one of the people who helped build that situation, and it’s fitting that he and his DJing partner Jonnie Wilkes along with the crowd at Numbers are seeing off Glasgow’s biggest summer in living memory with this club-focused day of the East End Social’s Last Big Weekend festival.

Headlining the day will be Numbers alumnus and globetrotting superproducer of Kanye fame, Hudson Mohawke (pictured), with Jackmaster and SOPHIE also picks of the new(er) boys. ‘I’m obviously biased as they’re on my label, but I’ve watched Golden Teacher blow away festivals across Europe all summer,’ says Twitch of one of his own acts he’s most excited by. ‘I was involved with

putting on Jeff Mills’ first ever UK gig and haven’t seen him play in over ten years so I’m excited about that, and it’s always a pleasure to have James Murphy play.’ With EES organisers Chemikal Underground joining both club curators, Twitch likes the fact the Sunday of LBW will see three disparate but highly regarded strands of Glasgow music demonstrate the creative strength and diversity of the city. ‘I think the East End Social has worked out great, and hats off to Chemikal Underground for pulling it off,’ he says. ‘It’s very easy to get stuck in a rut of using the same old venues in the same parts of the city, so anything that brings people in to, for some, unknown areas has to be a positive thing. I think over the next few years, we’ll see a lot more things happening in the East End.’ (David Pollock)
