MINI-FESTIVAL MAGIC WAVES SWG3, Glasgow, Fri 24 Oct

‘It’s a party where you don’t know what you’re going to hear next, and one where we only play music from the heart,’ says Berlin-based Magic Waves founder Casionova of his pirate radio station venture turned international clubbing brand. ‘It’s not sarcastic or ironic or pretentious or trying to be cool or any of that, it’s just good, honest, old-fashioned, down-to-earth rocking your socks off for the night. I suppose we remembered the free parties and pirate radio of the 80s and 90s and thought somebody should do something to keep the spirit of all that alive, in a way that wasn’t retro or backwards-looking.’ This Glasgow instalment should do just that. Despite Casionova’s claim that Magic Waves caters for fans of ‘good music it’s a rarer thing these days than it was, but really it’s as simple as that’, the sound of the brand since its inception in 2006 has always tended towards Italo and European disco. Headlining here will be recently rediscovered originator of the style, Bernard Fevre, aka Black Devil Disco Club (pictured), with 80s-bestriding New Order and Afrika Bambaataa producer Arthur Baker, long-serving Rotterdam DJ Mark Du Mosch and Mannequin Records boss Alessandro Adriani also attending.

‘I’m most excited about Black Devil Disco Club and Arthur Baker, simply because they haven’t played for us before and I’m a huge fan of both of their music for most of my life now,’ says Casionova, who has seen the radio venture absorbed into Intergalactic FM while MW label offshoot Cyber Dance continues to this day. He’s also keen to point to the late Italian producer Casco as a guiding influence. ‘His attitude, relentless positivity, hard experience and sheer and overwhelming love of music will always continue to inspire us.’ (David Pollock)
