WESTWORLD The robot revolt continues as HBO’s Wild West sci-fi returns
It’s been more than a year since season one of Westworld, HBO’s reboot of the late Michael Crichton’s solidly entertaining 1973 sci-i thriller. In the original i lm, a Wild West theme park is populated with robots that go haywire and start killing the guests. The TV series features a much broader scope than the original i lm, mainly focusing on the perspective of the park’s host androids as they gain sentience and start to rebel against the humans operating the resort. It explores themes of artii cial intelligence and theology in a similar manner to Ronald D Moore’s re-imagining of Battlestar Galactica, with added inspiration from video games such as Bioshock Ini nite, Red Dead Redemption and Grand Theft Auto. Created by husband-and-wife team Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, Westworld was nominated for three Golden Globes and 22 Emmy Awards, a particularly impressive feat for a sci-i show. Expect to see the return of Evan Rachel Wood (Dolores), Thandie Newton (Maeve), Jeffrey Wright (Bernard), Talulah Riley (Angela) and Ed Harris as the creepy Man in Black. New cast members include Gustaf Skarsgård (Vikings), Betty Gabriel (Get Out) and Fares Fares. And rumours (unlocked from the trailer’s binary code) suggest we’ll i nally get to see some of the other themed parks run by Delos with a Samurai / Shogun world looking most likely to make an appearance.
