Beauty and Advertising, City Art Centre.
Steian Szczelltun in ‘Class Myths and Culture’ writes that ‘glamour is a gigantic conlidence trick in which we are manoeuvred into psychic sell mutilation. Glamour is the universal locus ot desire. Glamour is High Tec Fascism'. Wendy Mciiiurdo's photographic work explores the glamour oi iemininity as deiined by the advertising industry-the aesthetic thought police ior women. Advertising otters saleable iantasies ior women which depend on the desire to be worthy oi being bought. Worth, it paralled with male deilned ideals at what women ought to look like to be sexual and attractive (but not threatening). can be seen to pose problems when the iantasy is compared uniavourabiy with the body. Appearance and surface periection are oliered with the next new anti-wrinkle cream, over-expensive slimming biscuits, new lip gloss. The product otters hope and the inevitable disappointment. Wendy Mcliiurdo’s
images— large, colourcibachrome prints, hand-tinted black and white photomurals — attempt to discuss the eiiects at this ideology on women and the inner l/eye which women use to look at themselves and their bodies, invariably in a sell-deprecating way. Advertising depends on luscious imagery, the iragmentaiion oi the body and rigid notions oi beauty (young, made-up, classless, thin). Wendy McMurdo’s work uses similar props as the basis oi her critique—velvets, silk, make-up. The use oi mirrors and the collage technique illustrate the way in which women’s bodies are reduced to an incomplete whole. However, it is easy to imagine their appropriation. Advertising knows no bounds in manipulation. Ideas have to be more explicit, less dependent on the use oi stereotyped imagery to promote their criticisms or the result is the next arty advertising image. This is a contradiction and diiiiculty women artists must deal with aesthetically ii the politics are important to them. (Lorna J. Waite)

Wols Until 2 Sept. The inspiration ofa generation of abstract artists in Europe, Wols trained in Germany as a photographer and moved to Paris in the 1930s. lnterned as an ‘enemy alien’ he took up drawing and watercolour and was influenced first by the Surrealists and later by Klee.
