ART & EXHIBITIONS

From a Northern Land/Bho Thir a Tuath, Portfolio Gallery, Edinburgh.

This exhibition marks a collaboration between photographer John Charity and poet Aonghas Macneacall, who writes in Gaelic and translates his work into English. Charity was commissioned by Ross and Cromarty District Council to record aspects of tile in the district, and Macneacail was then commissioned by the gallery to write poems to accompany a selection ol the photographs. The result is a gentle and affectionate look at the lives of the farmers, shepherds,

harp-players, sheep and dogs of the place. The beauty and desolation ot the land comes through without sentimentality (unlike Colin Baxter's work), and the words and the pictures interact to create in the viewer's mind a complex and immediate comprehension of aspects ot daily or yearly routines. A lamb learns how to suck; sun beats oil a tiled root; peat cutters wortr in pouring rain; a couple recover in a bar lrom a pre-weddlng tarring and mudding ritual; telegraph posts mark out the distance along a road.
