EDINBURGH Fridays

I Oroam The Mission. 11pm-3am. £3 (£1 admission tickets circulating). Now a Slam-free zone, but all the better for it. A change in club policy means that DJ Bootsy is spinning a hot mix of funk, soul, go-go and house, making this the best dance club in town. Glasgow’s miles better? Don’t you believe it. I Floral Rlot Network 2. 10.30pm—4am. £2. Experience an indie explosion of sonic flower grooves at what is currently Edinburgh’s busiest club. From Primal Scream to The Pastels, from The Smiths to The Stone Roses, a carefully considered playlist is ensuring a packed dancefloor. Good to see all those ‘Bomb Manchester’ T-shirts too. I Fuss Calton Studios. 11pm—4am. £3.50. See preview for details. I U.F.O The Venue. 12pm—4am. £2. Ok, so we haven't rated this very highly in the past, but it seems to be getting better. Upfront cuts ranging from indie dance to house to techno, with a Euro/U S hardcore influence. Hyper-bass, sound effects and sampling. I lisrieys Shady Lady‘s. 10.30pm-3am. £2. Living up to its name, the club plays mostly MOR reggae to a mostly older crowd. A smaller crowd too, of late , though with the supposed upsurge in popularity of this kind of music you never know what might happen. OTHERS I The Amphitheatre 10pm-4am. £1.75 before 11pm/£3.50 after. I Buster Browns 11pm—3.30am. £2.75. I Cato St James 8pm—Zam. £1 members/£2 non members. Prices rise after 11pm. Saturdays

I bedrock Club The Venue. 9pm—4am. Live rock bands and disco attract a good crowd to this popular night. See rock listings for details.

I Dimension-25 Oblomovs. 9pm—lam. FREE. Billed as a pre-club ‘club‘ with a Balearic attitude diverse dance and upfront sounds mixed with classics, lighting by WAR and backdrops by Dark Angel.

I Fuse Calton Studios. 11pm—4am. £3.50. See preview for details.

I Ketch Shady Lady’s. 11pm-3am. £2. The ever-popular Immigrant club changes its name and playlist - but not, we would suspect, its faithful band of regulars. 605 and 705 stuff combined with more upcto-date Mancunian nonsense, as well as indie faves like REM, Wonderstuff and New Order. A consistently good Saturday option - with not a hooded top in sight.

I Mambo Club Network 3. 10.30pm—3am. £2 members/£2.50 non members. Sir Ossie on the wheels of steel mixingthe best in African dance with calypso and

I Power'l‘he Mission. 10pm—3am. £3. Following in the footsteps of the long-running Kangaroo Klub, this aims to banish the prevalent sense of fashionable elitism which exists in city clubbing by

featuring swing beat and house in a less style-conscious atmosphere.

I Sex Boat Wee Red Bar, Edinburgh College of Art Union. 10pm—3am. £2 (look out for £1 invites). 30 June only, this month. If the em . . . unusual advertising campaign doesn't get you along to this new dance club, the eclectic playlist should. Hard and heavy new beat, electro, acid and hip hop. You will come . . .

I Messenger Reuse Sound System The Venue. 9pm—late. £2 (£1.50). For the first time in this city, a reggae club that plays Ragamuffin, Lovers Rock and some massive Dub sounds instead of chart reggae. On the night live MC Zeb, selecting rythrns rough and rugged, whilst using the 4k PA to its full effect.

Wednesdays

I Lite Shady Ladys. 9.30pm-2am. £2. An unknown quantity no more! Life plays indie all night, and yes, the Insipid Carpets' cow on their flyer does point towards music with a Mancunian bias.

I North The Mission. 10.30pm-3am. £2.50. Those fun-loving lads with Manchester fixations return for further adventures - with a difference. July 4 will be a Liverpool night, July 11 will be a Glasgow night, featuring music and PA‘s from the respective cities. Expect all those old north faves too though Charlatans, The Farm, Mondays, Roses etc. All those boasting excessively wide trousers are welcome.

I hope Wilkie House. 11pm-3am. £2.50 (£2). Yet another new mid-week club. Billed as ‘strangely strange, oddly normal’, their posters boast an impressive range of 605 and 70s stuff Hendrix, Led Zepplin, Velvet Underground, The Doors, and em . . . Fleetwood Mac. Nothing to boast about that last one.

Thursdays

I Chateaux Cha Che Blue Oyster Club. 10.30pm—3am. £2.50. Designer geara go-go at this stylish club which combines the best of both the gay and straight scenes under one groove. Suffering a steady decrease in popularity though - Roxy’s days would seem to be numbered.

I Atomic Ill-HRS Attack The Penthouse. 8pm—lam. FREE. If you thoughtthat hi-NRG ended with ‘So macho‘, then think again! DJ ’5 Dave and Adam play the hottest new imports, and if you don't burn out after that they also include some chart and dance music to ensure you do.

I insornnls Wilkie House. 11pm—3am. £3/£2. Experience the ultimate rave with an eclectic blend of indie dance, garage and deep house. The Shamen, That Petrol Emotion, 808 State, Happy Mondays, etc combine to come up with something really worth losing sleep over. After the success of the recent visit by J azzie Q, expect another big-name appearance soon. Watch this space . . .

I Shag The Mission. 10.30pm-3am. £2. Well, the price may have increased, but nothing stops the youth of Edinburgh from

Shagging.
