Daniel Reeves, The Well Di Patience, Pierce Institute, Govan.
Daniel Reeves has created a meditative temple tor the secular with his remarkable video sculpture, The Well 0i Patience. His cultural biography is that ol a survivor of the Vietnam trauma, a history at horror soothed by the inlluence at Eastern philosophy. His intention is to create a space which transiorms the senses, visually and spiritually, using moving images and spatial contigurations rooted in the mystical geometry oi the I'Ching. The centre oi the work is a revolving platform around which is a circular screen onto which imagery is beamed by video projectors. The imagery can be viewed lrom inside or outside the centre. Underscoring the sculptural dimensions at the work are the mystical properties at the mandalla and the hexagram. In the I'Ching, the well means union and is the image of a

tranquil dispensing oi beauty to those who approach it. The hexagram relers to nourishment. The well is the water indispensable to Iile. Metaphorically, above the moving platirom, the mandallic spirals are formed by wine goblets paired with hammers which produce chimes with the movement oi air. 0n the ground, concentric circles are lormed by rat traps upon which sit Buddhas. Between these levels, the screen is the locus ior the video imagery, 90 minutes of material gathered irom Reeves' travels in Asia, Africa, Europe, America and Scotland. Tranquillity and contemplation are evoked by this llow of images, this poetic drama at beauty, death, growth. mutability. The Well 01 Patience is a proloundly moving experience which illuminates the line irom the Suli poem, ‘but the dust of the rose petal belongs to the heart of the perfume seller'. (Lorna J. Waite)
